In 1957 the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) www.ngi.no created GEONOR A/S as a daughter company to produce test apparatus and instrumentation for related field of work designed and approved by NGI. Since 1970 GEONOR has supplied much of the specialized instrumentation specified by NGI for the offshore oil industry.
On February 20th 1985 GEONOR, USA, was established. In January 1988 the company incorporated as GEONOR Inc. GEONOR A/S and GEONOR, Inc. are independent companies with distribution agreements for geotechnical, structural, field and meteorological instrumentation manufactured by GEONOR, A/S.
GEONOR equipment is in use by consultants, contractors and Universities for research in over 70 countries. |

Representative test apparatus and field instrumentation include:
- The GEONOR/NGI laboratory Direct Simple Shear Apparatus
- GEONOR field vane shear apparatus
- A. P. Van den Berg® www.apvdberg.com Dutch Cone Penetration Test (CPT) equipment
- The GEONOR T-200 series precipitation gauges for snow and rain
- INSTANTEL® MiniMate & BlastMate vibration/blast monitors and seismographs
NGI was among the early developers and users of vibrating-wire field instrumentation. The NGI/GEONOR vibrating-wire system uses twin magnets and a unique circuit. The longevity of GEONOR’s vibrating wire instruments (30+ years in field service) and their performance in harsh locations, up to 1000 ft (300 m) below offshore structures in the North Sea, and in arctic and desert regions, are well documented. Typical vibrating-wire instruments include piezometers, precipitation gauges, weir overflow systems, earth pressure cells, extensometers, temperature sensors, strain gauges, and load cells. GEONOR also offers a complete range of equipment and field instrumentation from: RST, CONSOIL, INSTANTEL, EIJKELKAMP and others.
